TALISMAN FINE ART & TALISMAN SYMBOLIST STUDIES is both ONLINE GALLERY & ART DEALERS and an ART HISTORY SOURCE, particularly for SYMBOLIST ART, ART NOUVEAU PICTURES and ART DECO PICTURES. We therefore specialise in works 1850 - 1940, and these are mainly on paper, with a special emphasis on the Symbolist Art Movement and Art Deco Imagery. Additionally we have a particular interest in PASTORAL & VISIONARY ART, and EROTIC FINE ART.

For a COMPLETE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF ARTISTS IN ALL SECTIONS click here

We also show the pictures of a select group of contemporary artists whose work resonates with these styles, such as SEAN JEFFERSON and the pastoral artist JANE WISNER. More of Jane Wisner's work can be seen under PASTORAL & VISIONARY ART.

WE PROVIDE AS WELL, STUDY MORNINGS, DAYS, AND INDIVIDUAL LECTURES ABOUT ART HISTORY, ILLUSTRATED BY SLIDES. The individual lectures can range over various aspects of the history of art, but as TALISMAN SYMBOLIST STUDIES we specialise in art historical talks and study events that focus on the SYMBOLIST ART MOVEMENT of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. On the other side of this page you can view our current programme. You can also view EXTRACTS FROM LECTURES by clicking here: SELECTED LECTURE EXTRACTS

We deal in pictures mainly from our website, but do from time to time stage exhibitions and show at art and antique fairs. Let us know if you wish to be on our mailing list, either for news of new work being shown or for lectures that we are organizing. Click here to contact us.

Talisman Fine Art began ten years ago and is based in London and Cornwall. It derives its name from the symbolic associations to the word "Talisman", and also from a painting by the French artist Paul Sérusier. This was a tiny picture on a cigar box lid which he made under the tutelage of the great Symbolist Paul Gauguin, and which was felt by his colleagues to be such a ground breaking work that they called it "The Talisman".

Carol Leader

'The Odyssey – Image, Myth and the Inner World'

(For venue and booking details, see below).

Homer’s Odyssey has been a major artistic inspiration for nearly three thousand years. It charts the ‘homeward journey’ of Odysseus after proving himself to be a ‘hero’ in the Trojan War. It also explores the demanding experiences of his wife Penelope and their son while he has been away. But why has The Odyssey captured the imagination of artists, writers, poets and more recently film makers for so many years? The myth about the journey of one man and his family symbolises the inner journey of a human life with all its challenges, pitfalls and transformations. The perennial nature of this tale has spawned such classics as Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’; Monteverdi’s ‘Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria’; Kubrick’s ‘2001’ and Lucas’ ‘Star Wars’.

In this talk, Carol Leader will be focussing on some of the celebrated paintings and less well known images and artwork that have been inspired by the story of Odysseus. She will also be making links with a psychoanalytic understanding of myth and the mythic ‘inner’ journey that many humans find themselves to be on in the second half of their lives – a journey that the psychiatrist and analyst C.G. Jung called “Individuation”.

You might find it helpful to read the Odyssey should you wish but Carol with cover the sweep of the story in this talk that is fully illustrated with a Powerpoint presentation.
